CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: .5 Prerequisite: None

This one-semester class is a look at life from the prenatal world: through pregnancy, childbirth, and the first 12 years of a child’s life. This class is designed to increase the enjoyment and understanding of children and provide students with a framework of knowledge to make better decisions. At times a field trip to the Sidney Health Center may be offered. On this trip students' questions will be answered, and a tour of the OB wing and a viewing of an actual ultrasound as well as a guest speaker from the health department, will help enhance topic areas. Students will watch birthing videos and take certification when funding is available. Typically students will get to participate in the RealCare baby simulation. Highlights of this class include the RealCare babies (when available), creating a book, and creating a toy.

CULINARY ARTS I

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: .5 Prerequisite: None

This one-semester lab class emphasizes lab planning, basic industry standards, and food preparation. Students work together to prepare many recipes in lab groups of 3-4 students, ideally 3 people. Students learn basic background knowledge in measuring ingredients, reading recipes, and preparing quick bread, yeast bread, pasta, chicken, and beef main dishes as well as pies, cakes, and cookies. Emphasis is also placed on developing skills in meal preparation for working family members and food service careers.

CULINARY ARTS II

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: .5 Prerequisite: Culinary Arts I

This one-semester lab class is designed to meet the needs of students who have taken Culinary Arts I and still want to study further in this field. This course goes beyond the basics, and students develop their food preparation skills to a higher level as they prepare a variety of recipes to challenge their culinary skills for individual use or future use in the culinary workplace. ServSafe certification may be available depending on funding. This class contains required out-of-class work experiences that the teacher provides. Typically students will work at the MGEE or serve breakfast in the cafeteria, but there may be afterschool experiences. The potential foods to be prepared are cake pops, lollipops, breakfast foods, appetizers, homemade pasta, canned foods, and homemade cheese.

Culinary III

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: .5 Prerequisite: Culinary Arts I and II

This one-semester project-based/lab class is designed to give students an understanding and advancement within the culinary arts realm. The emphasis of this course is to focus on careers within the culinary realm along with business ideals and restaurant management. The first half of the course will focus on careers while the second half will focus on culinary business concepts. Students may at times be required to contribute out of class time as well as travel to local businesses for tours. The intent is to expose students to the restaurant realm and better understand what the culinary industry has to offer. At times there will be required out-of-class experiences students will need to complete; catering gigs, business experiences, ect. Food labs are scattered throughout but this is a career-heavy class where most materials are intended to teach individuals who want to possibly own or create their own culinary business.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION I

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit:1 Prerequisite: None, Child Develop. preferred

This full-year lab class is an in-school practicum class. Students who have completed the prerequisites can expand their knowledge into the early childhood education realm. First Aid and CPR training will be provided when funding is available. Students will run the Busy Beaver program and explore the realm of teaching. Workplace etiquette, lesson planning, and career exploration are major components of this class. Students have to have a motivated personality and be able to meet required HARD deadlines even when they are gone.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION II

Grades: 10, 11, 12 Credit: 1 Prerequisite: Approved application and ECE I

This full-year, two-period lab (3rd and 4th) class is a practicum that enables students who have successfully completed ECE 1 to apply for further experience in the realm of early childhood education by teaching alongside one other professional. Students will teach in an educational setting to gain a new perspective in the realm of education. Various Montana state trainings will be provided allowing workforce certifications. In certain cases, students may take ECE II but be within the Busy Beaver program only. Students have to have a motivated personality and be able to meet HARD deadlines even when they are gone.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION III

Grades: 11, 12 1 Credit: 1

Prerequisite: Approved application and ECE II prerequisites

This full-year, two-period lab(3rd and 4th) class is a practicum that enables students who have completed the prerequisites to venture into the community to teach alongside various professionals in the early childhood education realm. Students will aid, plan, and implement lessons. Application to this program is required. Various Montana certifications and training will be provided to allow for improved workforce skills.

CLASS LIMIT: 5, due to available experience opportunity and space

FIBER TECH

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: .5 or 1 Prerequisite: None

This class will be offered as a semester lab class and is designed for students who wish to develop basic sewing/quilting skills. Experienced students are encouraged to enroll as well. Students will create a quilting project, a crocheted stuffed animal, and a paper-pieced item during the semester with the approval of the teacher. Students will work individually and will be graded periodically on his/her classroom time management and completion of projects. Students will work on projects with instruction and assistance from the teacher. Students will mainly explore knitting, crocheting, paper piecing, and quilting.

FASHION I

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: .5 Prerequisite: None

This one-semester lab class is designed for students who want to learn more about the fashion world. It explores all aspects of the fashion scene, including color analysis and sustainable fashion. Students will study the identification of principles and elements of design in fashion. Basic techniques of construction will be learned. Students construct a project of their choice, based on approval. The semester project will be geared toward creating an advanced fashion garment. This class is for those students who enjoy fashion or are considering a future in the business of retail fashion. You will be required to purchase your own patterns, fabrics, and notions.

LEATHERCRAFT AND DESIGN

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: .5 Prerequisite: Fashion

This one-semester lab class is designed for students who want to learn more about leather crafting and designing miscellaneous items using Cricut. For the first eight weeks, students will be introduced to leathercraft tools as well as practice the basic components of leathercraft. Students will be responsible for getting the kits or pieces to complete their projects. Students will get the option of completing a coaster or bookmark. Supplies for the leathercraft portion will be shared among students. The remaining weeks will be spent learning about the design realm in terms of laws/regulations, material designing types, branding, using cricut design space, and finally making your own garments. We will make up to 4 projects (T-shirts, cards, stickers, and eagle gear). If time allows students will make additional items based on their preference. The students will be responsible for purchasing the material on which the design will go as well as vinyl types if necessary.
